Marian Council No. 3914 was chartered on November 7, 1954 with 43 charter members and 52 charter candidates. The council is titled after the Marian Year the Catholic Church named in 1954. Meetings were originally held in a two story house on 4th street which has since been torn down.
The Council currently meets and holds functions at the hall at 400 South 4th Street. The hall construction started in October 1972 with an expansion added in 1983 to bring the total space to over 12,000 sq. ft. There are currently over 200 members in the council.
The Council members are very active not only with St. James Church in Riverton, but also in the community. The Council sponsors Cub Scout Pack 46 and supports its activities.
ORGANIZATION HISTORY
The Knights of Columbus is a Catholic, family, fraternal and service organization. It was founded by Father Michael J. McGivney, curate at St. Mary's parish in New Haven, Conn. It was chartered on March 29, 1882 in the state of Connecticut.
Father McGivney's purpose was to help Catholic men remain steadfast in their faith through mutual encouragement, to promote closer ties of fraternity among them, and to set up an elementary system of insurance so that widows and children of members in the group who might die would not find themselves in financial straights.
The founder and first officers chose the name "Knights of Columbus" because as a Catholic group, it should relate to Christopher Columbus, the Catholic Discoverer of America. At the same time "Knights" would signify that the membership embodied the knightly ideals of spirituality and service to the church.
The small group has blossomed into an international society of more than 1.6 million Catholic men in over 11,000 councils. The headquarters are still in New Haven, Conn.
The council currently has over 200 members.

Riverton is a small community located on the Sangamon River just 7 miles east of the Capital of Illinois, Springfield. The population of Riverton is approximately 2638 (approximately 1060 families). Riverton is positioned 39.84 degrees north of the equator and 89.54 degrees west of the prime meridian.
Riverton was founded around 1825 and was originally named Judy's Ferry for the ferry business located here on the Sangamon River. In 1837 the village was renamed Jamestown in honor of James Reed, the person who established the first industry in town, a cabinet furniture company. In 1867, a Mr. Howlett came to Jamestown in search of oil. When drilling he instead struck coal, which is said to be the first discovery of coal in central Illinois. To honor his contributions, the town name was change to Howlett in 1868. In 1873, the town became known as Riverton because of its close proximity to the Sangamon River.
Today, Riverton is a prosperous and growing community. In addition to maintaining its own utility company (one of the few cities in Illinois to do so) and a school district for all grades, the community also supports a large number of businesses. Riverton is based in strong family and community values and this is strengthened by a large number of churches and organizations, such as the Knights of Columbus, that work diligently to improve the quality of life for its residents. Riverton youth are very active in sports, such as baseball, softball and soccer, scouting and various school and church activities.

The Ladies Auxiliary sponsors several events throughout the year. Any Christian women
interested in finding out more about the Ladies Auxiliary should contact Cindy Pottier.
The Council has a beautiful hall that can be rented by individuals and groups for a multitude of functions such as weddings, banquets and meetings. The hall seats up to 425 people, is available 7 days a week, has full kitchen (caterer staging) and bar facilities, and plenty of convenient parking. Committed $8.8 million to the US Bishops Pro-Life educational campaign, plus $1 million in in-kind services for the production of pro-life materials, to overturn the pro-abortion mentality and defend the right to life.
Bring the Pope to the world at least three times a year by providing the uplink cost for the televising of papal ceremonies, especially at Christmas and during Holy Week.
Underwrote completely the renovation of the entire facade of St. Peters Basilica in Rome, the most famous church in the world, the statues of Sts. Peter and Paul in St. Peters Square, and the historic Rooms of the Architects in the Basilica proper.
Raised and distributed more than $105 million and contributed 50 million volunteer-hours in service to Church, community, youth, and fellowman in 1997.

Sponsor daily Mass for deceased Brother Knights at St. Mary's Church in New Haven and enable widows of Knights to receive COLUMBIA magazine each month.
Paid $86 million in death benefits to the families of deceased Brother Knights in a recent year and allocated $207 million in dividends to insurance members.

What are the eligibility requirements?
Just that you be a practical Catholic male, 18 years of age or older (see next
section).
Do I have to belong to a particular parish to join this council?
No, we have many members that live and attend church in Springfield, Sherman and
other areas.
Is there a fixed amount of time I am required to spend on Knight activities?
No, there is no minimum amount of time required, however volunteerism is an
important part of the Knights so that the community can be helped by our efforts.
Can I transfer my membership to this council or get my expired membership
reinstated?
Yes, please contact the financial secretary for all the details.
What are the benefits of joining the Knights?
Some of the numerous benefits include fellowship with a terrific group of Catholic
men, use of the members room at the hall and possible reductions in hall rental rates,
ability to purchase insurance from the Knights of Columbus AAA rated insurance program at
low prices, and your family can be a part of the many special activities throughout the
year. The knights can be a path for your efforts for pro-life, vocations, feeding the
poor, helping the mentally handicapped, and many other worthwhile causes.
Is this a secret society?
No, we are a very open organization with a strong community presence. Only the
three degree advancement ceremonies are kept secret to maintain the power of their
message.
Membership in the Knights of Columbus is open to practical Catholic men in union with the Holy See, who shall not be less than 18 years of age on their last birthday. A practical Catholic is one who lives up to the Commandments of God and the precepts of the Church. Application blanks are available from any member of the Knights of Columbus. Every knight is happy to propose eligible Catholic men for consideration as members.
Acceptance of the applicant depends upon a vote of the members of the subordinate council in which he is making application.
All priests and religious brothers having duly made application for membership and participated in the ceremonials become honorary life members of the Order and are exempt from payment of dues.
Application for membership must be made through the council in the community nearest the applicant's place of residence. Interested prospects without a permanent domicile, such as men temporarily away from home through duty in the armed forces, may make application through their hometown council or at the nearest council on a military base.
If favorably voted upon, the applicant becomes a member by initiation known as the First Degree. He subsequently is advanced through the Second Degree and the Third Degree.
There are modest initiation fees and dues set by subordinate councils under regulations established by the Supreme Council. The insurance privileges are available to all members who can qualify, which represents an important advantage of membership. For men in every walk of life the name Knights of Columbus engenders the image of a united organization, efficiently going about it tasks of charity, unity, fraternity, patriotism and defense of the priesthood. It is composed of men who are giving unselfishly of their time and talents in service of God and their country.
Membership in the Knights of Columbus provides opportunity for wholesome association with congenial companions who are, first of all, practical Catholic gentlemen. It offers the opportunity for fellowship with those who are of the same belief, who recognize the same duty to God, to family and to neighbor and who stand side by side in defense of those beliefs. Programs are so organized as to appeal to the individual interest of the members. Through many constructive activities of Christian fraternity, members are enabled to render service to their Church, their country and their fellowman. Through membership they develop a consciousness of their ability to lead and to assist.
Organized Columbianism, united behind the individual Knight of Columbus, provides the power of an intelligent, alert body of Catholic men--a strength which the individual by himself cannot achieve.
Knights of Columbus has a proud heritage. The qualified Catholic man can share in that heritage and build an even greater future by affiliating himself with this forceful, effective body.
Another degree open to members of the Knights of Columbus is that of the Fourth (or Patriotic) Degree. On February 22, 1900, the first exemplification of that degree was held in New York City. The ritual added patriotism to the three original principles of the Order: charity, unity and fraternity. Any Third Degree member in good standing, one year after the anniversary of his First Degree, is eligible for membership in the Fourth Degree.
The primary purpose of the Fourth Degree is to foster the spirit of patriotism by promoting responsible citizenship and a love of and loyalty to the Knights' respective countries through active membership in local Fourth Degree groups called assemblies. Fourth Degree members must retain their membership as Third Degree members in the local council to remain in good standing.
Certain members of the Fourth Degree serve as honor guards at civic and religious functions, an activity which has brought worldwide recognition to the Knights of Columbus organization.
